Kitchen Remodel: And the winner is...

A local cabinet shop...

After looking at a number of options, we decided to go with new cabinets. Home Depot wanted over $11,400 to reface our existing cabinets (no joke!). So we obtained some local quotes on refacing (half of what Homely Despot wanted but with better quality). In the end the uncertainty of what it will actually look like when re-finished turned us off.

From now on, I'll shop at Lowes before Homely Despot...

We are going with a local cabinet maker who has an excellent reputation (he won us over with their cabinet quality and design). Quartersawn red oak will be the the wood of choice with a shaker style cabinet (as we like the look and it reflects our red oak flooring through out the house).

This is the original plan we chose to go with...
...the cabinets on the far right will face into the dining room...
...the final measurements have been made...
...and we bought a new refrigerator...
...so will post the final layout...
...eventualy...

Narrowed the list to (from l. to r.)...
...natural maple, natural oak, qs red oak, qs white oak...
...on a piece of our misison style furniture...

...the order preserved, our choices on our red oak flooring...

...our final choice...
...quartersawn read oak with a natural finish!

good decision!

the local guys (usually) have a reputation to defend and have to care what every customer thinks.

Also, a small shop usually means that one person will take your kitchen design and oversight from start to finish, which seriously reduces the error count.

Hi Nathan:

I agree. The fellow from the cabinet shop we are dealing with is the guy who started it. His son is running/owns it now, so he is partially retired. They have like 40 employees now. Their work seems to be exceptionally good. I prefer having them come in, make the final measurements, and install it as well.
